One of my favorite things to do was to walk on a deserted beach, regardless of the weather. Enjoying the sound of the sighing waves when they touch the sand. And hearing the cries of the seagulls, feeling the cool and often damp sea breeze on your face... Smelling the scent of the sea, and tasting the salt on your lips...

Do you also love walking along a quiet beach and breathing in the fresh sea air?

Yes?

Then I suppose you didn't know that acidified oceans and seas are so polluted with P-FAS (forever chemicals), plastics, pesticides and other poisons that you cannot breathe clean air on any coast...

Nowhere.

The “spray” from crashing waves is seriously polluted…. Add to that the incalculable amount of garbage in the air anywhere on earth….

Let that sink in. Preferably not in your body, but you no longer have any say in that.

Or do you?

Who can bring about change in the causes of this pollution?

For that, you need to know what the source is.

Companies, and governments that do not limit pollution through strict regulations, you might say.

Wrong, they are the producers, and governments stimulate and finance economic growth, and meanwhile look the other way. But in my opinion, they are not the real source.

Overconsumption

I think the source is overconsumption. That which we collectively consume more than what the earth can handle. Can handle in terms of supply of raw materials, energy and other resources for polluting production. And then the transport all over the globe and the processing of waste.

The battle we must fight is the battle with people who cannot stop buying !
Less consumption is less production and less growth. Less production and less growth is less destruction of the planet.

We, all the people who can buy things, we are the consumers. You and I have the power to initiate change. We have to stop overconsuming.

One earth, so we must consume within the limits of one earth. If we bring our ecological footprint under the boundaries of what one earth can support, companies and governments will be forced to anticipate it.

Change the world, start with yourself !

Artwork: Sighing Waves (2)

With a soft sigh,
exhausted waves
bury themselves
in the scorched sand

The oceans sigh under the enormous burden they must bear from CO2, PFAS, pesticides, plastics and high temperatures. Nowhere on earth are the seas clean, nowhere can you still breathe pure sea air….

Sighing Waves (2) is an artwork in my collection Infinite Sea.

ALL WE NEED IS LESS CONSUMING

Through my artworks I ask you to reflect for a moment on the nature around you, on the beautiful feeling that nature can evoke, on your actions to support the wellbeing of the earth and everything that lives on it, on what humanity loses when many of us continue on the destructive path of ever more greed and consuming, on how you can survive in this rapidly changing world…
