A dark, chilly and rainy day in May. At some point the rain comes pouring down. But luckily, a beautiful lane with a tightly tangled canopy of leaves provides shelter.

Some people are always dreaming in color, other's in shades of gray, or both in an irregular variety. Many people are not sure, or hardly remember it.
Late in the evening after a sunny day. The sun is about to set, the world is waiting for the night to come. Dark rain clouds cover the sky over the lake, a rain shower passes by.
Jacob Berghoef's "Earth Cries" combines art and poetry, expressing grief over Earth Overshoot Day 2023. The work highlights the toxic, irreversible damage we've caused, living off the earth's credit without a way to repay. It's a wake-up call to consider our incessant consumption and its grave, lasting impacts on the planet.

In the project Drowned Earth I show you how I see the earth of a century from now. A fusion of the forests and the oceans, with hopefully in the distant future a rich ecosystem that has managed to adapt to the new circumstances.

Does a human being have more right to a clean earth and a safe and healthy life than a bird, a tree, a flower?
If your answer to this is "Yes," then why?
Hasn't that human being forfeited that right by polluting the earth, by risking his health through bad eating habits and by using year after year more than what the earth can provide?
Does a Western person have as much right to it as a person in a developing country who has never been guilty of that unbridled consuming, polluting and unhealthy behavior?
Right or Favor?
Do I have a RIGHT to live in a healthy environment? Or is life a FAVOR of nature, which I may enjoy as long as I behave nicely and don't make a mess of my body and my surroundings, and that of people around me and people far away?
I can get terribly irritated by the cries of Western people about their rights. Right to clean air, right to clean water, right to healthy food, right to... In my opinion, we in the 'developed countries' have long since forfeited all our environmental rights, and yet we continue as if the amount of available rights for us can never be exhausted.
Wake up, it's long run out. There is no clean water anymore, no clean air, no clean fertile land. Your rights, my rights, they all stop, where and when we abuse the rights of nature.
We spoiled children, we must earn our rights for today and tomorrow and the rights of humanity in the future. By sustainable living, by consuming significantly less, by cleaning up what we ourselves have polluted.

Many people dream of an earth that is safe and clean, that is treated with care so that it can give enough to all its inhabitants without becoming exhausted. Only when all those dreams come to life in common sense and people take action to live differently will that dream become a reality.
Do you ever dream about that too? And what did you do today to make those dreams come alive?
I washed myself this morning with cold water, yesterday I grabbed my bike to go shopping. Then I covered a section of the vegetable garden where the harvest is finished with a layer of shredded garden waste. As food for the new sowing season next year, to cover the soil in its resting period against drying out and prevent the growth of too many weeds...

August heralds the beginning of the harvest season. In practice, we have been harvesting in our vegetable and fruit garden for several weeks, but the farmers around us are now gradually beginning to harvest the crops as well.
It feels to me like the beginning of the end of the growing season. It is not yet autumn, or in my words, nature's rest period has not yet begun; in fact, it is the busiest time of year for food-growing humans. But nature's task is almost over for this growing season, the fruits can be picked.
And in recent days we have seen the first flights of geese pass by, shuttling back and forth between the nature reserve where they spend the night, and the fields where harvesting has taken place, feeding on the scraps left by the harvesters.
Have they sensed that harvest time is beginning, and there is plenty of food for them? I think so...

While the ice caps are melting and the oceans and seas are warming and being robbed and poisoned, humans on land are not sitting still either. Or perhaps better to say, that's where the misery begins. Because that's where humans have settled and do most of their 'ingenuity'.
The Western world should really be called the 'land of never enough'. There where consumption was invented, at the same time as growth for growth's sake and the 'creation of shareholder value'. In other words, profits that are never high enough. Our addiction to money is so strong, that we are prepared to exhaust the earth for it, to destroy plants and animals and to make the world of the children and grandchildren of humanity dry, or flooded, and hot. In many places even unbearably hot.
Many people even think (still!) that the consequences of global warming will not be too bad. After all, we are smart, a technical solution will be found that will allow us to continue living the way we are used to...
Meanwhile on the already scorched earth...
...larger and larger parts of the earth are being scorched. Scorching by the ever-increasing temperatures. By spraying poison to make the yield of intensive agriculture as high as possible. And by the emission of poison into the air, land and water as a by-product of our endless consumption. Scorched by the fires that rage around the world day in and day out as a result of increasing drought. And by fires started by humans to turn even more nature into monoculture with endless fields of genetically engineered crops on exhausted, diseased soil.

Kelp forests are dense areas of kelp growth that occur near coastal waters. Kelps are ‘primary producers’ that modify the environment to create suitable habitat for a great diversity of species. Therefore they are known as foundational species.

I show you how I see the earth from, let's say, a few centuries from now. An amalgamation of the forests and the oceans. With hopefully in the distant future a rich ecosystem that has managed to adapt to the new conditions.
Yesterday I climbed up the hill But halfway there, the wind and fog made climbing hard The grass slippery with moisture, and smelling of spring A song helped me to continue on my way Once at the top I used the moss as a pillow while the voices of the wind in the trees soothed me to sleep.
Last Thursday morning Anuscka and I were intensely enjoying our introduction to Vietnamese coffee. We only drink 1 cup of coffee a day, so when you taste a fantastically beautiful coffee for the first time, you enjoy it with very small sips. When my cup was empty, I looked, as always, at the "markings" the coffee grounds had left on the bottom. I grind and brew my coffee by hand, pouring it through a metal mesh filter, so there is always some sediment in there. Mmmmmm.... 🙂
The 'drawing' I saw fascinated me, and inspired me to create this artwork.

Daphne Nguyen, she introduced me to the coffee coming from her company's coffee farms in Vietnam. Anuscka and I love this coffee, the passion she and her colleagues have for coffee and the enormous commitment to the coffee farmers. I'm sure she never expected that her coffee would become the basis for an artwork...
Karina Mosser, a wonderful painter and a great person to work with. Recently she made a series of abstracts for me to use as background for my digital creations. Through a green abstract painting of hers, I managed to create a work that brings together Iran and Vietnam as a landscape for my "coffee tree".

Light. Hidden behind a veil of silence of the fading darkness Celebrate a new day Every day
Time is an abstract concept, but at the same time compellingly concrete. It's a human-designed scheme, into which we think all our doing (and what we don't do) should fit. And which must be accounted for regularly, with great accuracy. Perhaps time even is the only abstract concept of which most people feel they are constantly short.
Anuscka and I are in the fortunate position of feeling that we have more than enough time. And in doing so, we have become increasingly detached from the contrived scheme.
For us, a year is a bit much to comprehend and embrace. We try to focus our lives on the rhythm of the sunlight.

I have enjoyed converting a small selection of my forest photographs into intensely dark black and white artworks. They were of course meant to express my concern about the climate and the lack of climate action.
But they have also become a new way for me to look at my earlier work. After I finished the black and white works, I felt a great need to do something with colors. Much bolder colors than what you generally see in my work, sunsets excepted. I asked myself: how do we prevent the forests from becoming as dark and gloomy as in the black-and-white photos. How do we bring back color where it is needed, and keep the colors that are still present from fading?
And then, Black Friday came into sight, so I read in various newsletters and posts on LinkedIn... The desire to make a statement against it was strong.
And so the series "Colorful Days" was born.

Preserving color by degrowth
It is an indictment of the greed for buying, the unbridled consumption that many people, living in so-called "developed countries," practice on a daily basis. The works ask you and everybody who sees them the question, "What have you done to preserve my color, to restore colors where they are fading, to bring more color into the gray world that people create around them and where there is no place for nature anymore."

An appeal to you too
They call on you to boycott the increasing number of "black days" like Black Friday. Days that further fuel humanity's consumerism. They are telling you that living with nature, preserving and restoring nature, is only possible if Western man consumes significantly less. And what we consume, must be produced colorfully, that is, in harmony with nature.

I must admit that I have enjoyed converting a small selection of my forest photographs into intensely dark black and white artworks. They were of course meant to express my concern about the climate and the lack of climate action.

An intense sunset briefly colors the sky red in many shades. Soon after, it is dark, the day is over. A beautiful ode to autumn…

Endless Road - A dark gray day. It is beginning to get dark and the wind is finally abating. A curtain of rain obscures the view. But I know this road, I know we're almost home.
A tranquil night. On the distant horizon appears a moonlit sail, slowly driven by a light breeze.
As you probably know, Karina Mosser and I have been collaborating in various ways in the creation of new artworks.
With this artwork "Moonlit Sail" we proudly present to you a new artwork in this unique series. Karina painted on a print of one of my photographs.

A special calm comes over the evening when the sun begins to disappear behind the horizon and the light of the day fades away. Nature awaits the night. I love that quiet moment of the day and the scent that announces the coming of night.

A week ago I posted about "Fotopentrito" and "Fotopentriti". Two words the American panter Karina Mosser and I coined to describe our new collaboration in painting on a photograph.
For this post, I had quickly put together a triptych. It consisted of a painting by Karina, a photo of myself and a digital fusion between the two. The response on that triptych was so positive that I sat down to make it a real set of 3 artworks.
So here is the result, available as a triptych in any size. Besides that, the artworks are also for sale as three separate works, of course also in any size you desire. And of course available as limited edition artworks or as open edition prints.

A unique fusion of fine art photography and painting !
Sunrise brings a serenade beyond the dark silence of the night. The tender light gently touches the water and the reeds, in a duet with the wind
In recent months, the painter Karina Mosser (USA) and I have been collaborating in various ways in the creation of new artworks. And with this artwork "Sunrise Serenade", we have taken a new path. Karina painted on a print of one of my photographs.

I made this impressionistic artwork which forms the basis of this work, in March 2019 in south and south east Sweden.
Hundreds of small islands lie off the coast of south-east Sweden. They usually consist of no more than rocky soil with shrubs and trees, surrounded by a collar of reeds. And on this beautiful winter day, at sunrise the light plays a serenade on the reeds, accompanied by the wind.

In my collaboration with Karina Mosser, we started a new project: painting on a photograph.
This isn't a unique way of creating art, it has been done before.
But with the fluid fusion of our styles and materials, we are sure that a series of unique works of art will emerge. We set out to find a word that would describe this medium well.
There is no existing word for painting on a photograph. So we composed two new words. We derived these from the words for 'painting' and 'photo' in the Esperanto language.
Thus arose Fotopentrito to denote the medium and a work of art painted on a photograph, and the word Fotopentriti to describe several works of art made in this way.

The sun passes through a crystal sphere
A rainbow escapes into darkness
In front of a small window in the west facade of our house, hangs a beautifully cut crystal ball of about 5 centimeters (2 inches) in diameter.
And every sunny evening when the sun is low above the horizon and its rays pierce the sphere, a fascinating spectacle unfolds in our room.
Here I Am is the second artwork in the collaboration with Tress.c

A fellow artist told me about her way of working in an introductory conversation via the LinkedIn messenger. I wrote "if you have any ideas for collaboration sometime, let's hear it". And I totally meant that, because I love working with other artists.
That she would answer within two seconds "Oh, I already do !", I did not quite expect...
Tress.c (Visual Narrative Art) is a special artist. Using her own photography with edits in multiple layers, she creates artworks that tell a story. A visual story about the life of her daughter, who lives with "invisible" disabilities in the form of complex neurological disorders.
And now, as a beginning of our collaboration, she has created two artworks, using one of my photographs. The result is a powerful diptych representing the healing power of nature for her daughter. The power that calms her body, mind and spirit. Tress.c has chosen to create this diptych to show her daughter's innocence, her strength and that inner battle that shines brightly in her eyes. To show how she is fighting for her own life.
Here is the first artwork: Crying Pines. "Crying Pines", is full of light and calm, to show the victories, the peace in her daughter's heart and where she is facing the viewers, challenging them to look at her as a whole, not as a disability.

A dark, chilly and rainy day in May. At some point the rain comes pouring down. But luckily, a beautiful lane with a tightly tangled canopy of leaves provides shelter.
The sound of a light breeze Cherry blossom petals dazzling into the light
Spring. A gentle breeze takes the petals of fading cherry blossoms into the light.
And now the cherry tree is also in bloom. A dozen bees and bumblebees are busy collecting pollen. There are not many bees, but they are here when the fruit trees bloom !

Many, many times I have tried to make a photo in my style with my 'old' iPhone 4s. Especially early in the morning, when I walk the dog. Many hundreds of photos, and never there was one to my liking. Until, one beautiful morning, my movement of the phone was apparently quick and sure enough to successfully capture this flaming sunrise on dragon wings.

I love Fado music and, more in general, Portuguese folk music.
One of the most beautiful Portuguese songs for me is Meu Alentejo sung by Dulce Pontes (see the link at the bottom of this post). But even without knowing a translation of the lyrics (and I don't speak a word of Portuguese), this song really touched me the first time I heard it. And it still does...
Dulce is a singer who sings evocatively. Her voice is full of emotion. After I read the translation of the lyrics, I immediately saw a field before me with waving grain, ready to be harvested. So I chose this artwork to go with the song by Dulce Pontes. A tribute to her, and to the region Alentejo she sings about.

At the end of a gray spring day, a light breeze rises and the mist that has lain like a blanket over the land and sea all day disappears. A fairly dense cloud cover seems to conclude the day without sunshine. But then a clear, cloudless sky appears on the horizon. I run outside with my camera, moments like this usually only last about 10 minutes....

Another photo that I made on the occasion of the exhibition 'El Duende' in 2017. I made two series of photos in the mountains near Bellano, Italy. When making those series, the theme of the exhibition inspired me. I went looking for the spirit of mountains and valleys. Duende is identified as the spirit of evocation, physical and emotional response elicited by art. Having the Duende is having that thrill that makes you smile or cry when seeing a particularly expressive artistic performance. The term is often used in folk music in particular in Flamenco, during the most intense performance.

One foggy day, I go to a forest near our house. I hope it will be foggy in the forest too, unfortunately that turns out not to be the case. But the morning light and the silence in the deserted forest, create a special atmosphere. It gives space to let your thoughts run free.

Not quite a sunset yet, but close. When the sun pierces through the cloud cover in winter, I have to take my chance. Too often the sun disappears behind a thick gray blanket immediately after briefly showing itself, only to show its face again the next day (or even a few days later). And if it also feels like the sun kisses the world before going to sleep, I have another good reason to quickly make a series of photos....

Colors disappear in the mist I am overwhelmed by silence, alone, afraid that I've lost my way But then I realize, to find the way is to stop looking
A gray, foggy day. A day like so many, where you only see vague outlines of the path you are walking. The silence and lack of sight are oppressive at first. Until you regain peace and confidence, and let the trees guide you.

A lonely cold morning Footsteps muffled Endless carpet of stillness
Fresh snow, as far as the eye can see. The forest looks spacious, light, and larger than usual. It is quiet, and the world feels deserted. Only the muffled crunch of my footsteps in the fresh snow.
After two years without 'real' snow, last week we had a few centimeters of snow. A wonderful moment to enjoy the silence of a white forest.

Embrace the joy of daylight Find comfort in the bright light of a fresh breeze and the winter sun
Our day with no screens, no internet and (almost) no electricity was a breath of fresh air.
Literally, because we took a long walk. Figuratively, because we reflected and talked about our online time and use of electrical devices. Even in our minimalistic household, this generated several immediately implementable ideas, providing peace of mind, time for reflection, time to do different things for a change, and saving on our CO2 emissions.
So we will continue to do this. One day i-off and e-off every week. We can heartily recommend it, if only to become aware of your i-use and e-use and the alternatives that are available.

Embrace the silence of darkness Find comfort in the scant light of a candle and the winter sun
Anuscka and I decided to spend a day "in darkness" every week. Figuratively speaking that is, it will be a day with minimal use of electricity and no use of the internet, and screens in general.
Why? Because we are curious to see how we like it. And because we want to spend less time behind screens. Because we would like to have a recurrent period of silence and reflection. Finally, because using very little electricity for a day contributes significantly to reducing our CO2 footprint...

Falling snow muffles the moans of breaking waves. A white silence rises from the morning twilight. The snow-covered beach welcomes the day.
A walk on a virgin white beach on the first day this winter that snow has fallen. It's cold, quiet and breathtakingly beautiful… What a fantastic way to start a new day !

First snowflakes falling The cold breeze is scattering frozen scent of pines
After two years without 'real' snow, some snow fell in northwest Jutland earlier this week. Above that, it was cold enough for a few days to enjoy the white landscape. A wonderful moment for a walk in a forest. The delicate scent of damp pine trees is dispersed through the forest by an icy breeze.

A duende is a fairy- or goblin-like mythological creature from Spanish, Portuguese and South American folklore. Duendes also have some traits similar to goblins and kobolds.
The Duendes are forest spirits. They help people who get lost in the forest, so that they will find their way home. In time, the Duende is also the spirit of evocation. The physical and emotional response, elicited by art. So having the Duende is equivalent to that thrill that makes you smile or cry in front of a particularly expressive artistic performance.
I made 'Duende' with an old analog camera. It was the first impressionistic forestscape photo with that camera. A sunny morning on a path in a forest, near the city of Nijmegen in The Netherlands. The sunlight seems to dance across the path. It moves quickly from tree to tree. As a spirit that keeps an eye on me to see if I'm doing okay.

While I was trying to photograph a sunset before the sun was completely below the horizon, I realized that the beauty of light is often determined by how it is filtered, veiled or scattered. Here on earth the light is always filtered by something. The atmosphere, clouds, a canopy, mist… In fact, all these 'filters' make the sunlight much more visible, even almost touchable…

Associating is a strange phenomenon. Sometimes a line from a song or poem comes straight into my mind when I see a photo I've made. When my wife saw this photo yesterday, that I had made half an hour before, the first thing she said was: 'Where The Green Ants Dream'.
Images of that movie immediately came to my mind, and although this photo has no direct relationship to it, the title stuck in my head for this photo.
It fits perfectly for me...

I photographed a far too bright sunset two days ago. Then I suddenly realized that the beauty of light is often determined by how it is filtered, veiled or scattered. And here on earth the light is always filtered by something. The atmosphere, clouds, a canopy, mist… In fact, all these 'filters' make the sunlight much more visible, even almost touchable…
So here is Shrouded (2), the second photo in a small series of a sunset, photographed in my abstract realistic style through high grass.
Through my artworks I ask you to reflect for a moment on the nature around you, on the beautiful feeling that nature can evoke. Thus to think about your actions to support the wellbeing of the earth and everything that lives on it. The current website is a bit dated after 5 years, so it’s time for a new look. In a design made by my youngest son, I’ve been working hard the past few weeks to fill it with a selection of my work. Not everything is ready yet, but I’d appreciate it if you take a look. The current domain name jacobberghoef dot art remains in use and will also bring you on the new website from November 1st.
