Do you know the sound of green? No? Then listen to the birds in the trees after the rain.
And do you know the scent of green? Take a stroll through a wet spring forest, and you will never forget this wonderful scent.
Some time ago we spent a few days on the beautiful island of Langeland.
On a rainy day we went to the northern half of the island...
Trees tangled
together in green
A lonely road,
deep
into the woods
Shelter for the cold
May rain
A dark, chilly and rainy day in May. At some point the rain comes pouring down. But luckily, a beautiful lane with a tightly tangled canopy of leaves provides shelter.
Late in the evening after a sunny day. The sun is about to set, the world is waiting for the night to come. Dark rain clouds cover the sky over the lake, a rain shower passes by.

Through my artworks I ask you to reflect for a moment on the nature around you, on the beautiful feeling that nature can evoke, on your actions to support the wellbeing of the earth and everything that lives on it, on what humanity loses when many of us continue on the destructive path of ever more greed and consuming, on how you can survive in this rapidly changing world…
The sun passes through a crystal sphere
A rainbow escapes into darkness
In front of a small window in the west facade of our house, hangs a beautifully cut crystal ball of about 5 centimeters (2 inches) in diameter.
And every sunny evening when the sun is low above the horizon and its rays pierce the sphere, a fascinating spectacle unfolds in our room.
Here I Am is the second artwork in the collaboration with Tress.c
This is what she says about it:
"It is a darker work to show the bitter days, the tiring days where the light is the stronger element that conveys "she's not done yet, she's still putting herself through it."
Through my artworks I ask you to reflect for a moment on the nature around you, on the beautiful feeling that nature can evoke. Thus to think about your actions to support the wellbeing of the earth and everything that lives on it. And on what humanity loses when many of us continue on the destructive path of ever more greed and consuming. And please, reflect on how you can survive in this rapidly changing world…
A fellow artist told me about her way of working in an introductory conversation via the LinkedIn messenger. I wrote "if you have any ideas for collaboration sometime, let's hear it". And I totally meant that, because I love working with other artists.
That she would answer within two seconds "Oh, I already do !", I did not quite expect...
Tress.c (Visual Narrative Art) is a special artist. Using her own photography with edits in multiple layers, she creates artworks that tell a story. A visual story about the life of her daughter, who lives with "invisible" disabilities in the form of complex neurological disorders.
And now, as a beginning of our collaboration, she has created two artworks, using one of my photographs. The result is a powerful diptych representing the healing power of nature for her daughter. The power that calms her body, mind and spirit. Tress.c has chosen to create this diptych to show her daughter's innocence, her strength and that inner battle that shines brightly in her eyes. To show how she is fighting for her own life.
Here is the first artwork: Crying Pines. "Crying Pines", is full of light and calm, to show the victories, the peace in her daughter's heart and where she is facing the viewers, challenging them to look at her as a whole, not as a disability.
Through my artworks I ask you to reflect for a moment on the nature around you, on the beautiful feeling that nature can evoke. The sound of a light breeze Cherry blossom petals dazzling into the light
Spring. A gentle breeze takes the petals of fading cherry blossoms into the light.
And now the cherry tree is also in bloom. A dozen bees and bumblebees are busy collecting pollen. There are not many bees, but they are here when the fruit trees bloom !

Many, many times I have tried to make a photo in my style with my 'old' iPhone 4s. Especially early in the morning, when I walk the dog. Many hundreds of photos, and never there was one to my liking. Until, one beautiful morning, my movement of the phone was apparently quick and sure enough to successfully capture this flaming sunrise on dragon wings.
'On Dragon Wings' is a new artwork in my collection 'Wavy Fields'. I made it early in the morning while walking through the fields near my house.

You, harvester, who work so peacefully Oh you, who harvest the wheat so peacefully Harvest the sorrows from my soul Harvest them and carry them away with you
I love Fado music and, more in general, Portuguese folk music.
One of the most beautiful Portuguese songs for me is Meu Alentejo sung by Dulce Pontes (see the link at the bottom of this post). But even without knowing a translation of the lyrics (and I don't speak a word of Portuguese), this song really touched me the first time I heard it. And it still does...
Dulce is a singer who sings evocatively. Her voice is full of emotion. After I read the translation of the lyrics, I immediately saw a field before me with waving grain, ready to be harvested. So I chose this artwork to go with the song by Dulce Pontes. A tribute to her, and to the region Alentejo she sings about.
The original lyrics and translation are also below the image.
'Carry Away My Sorrows' is a new artwork in my collection 'Wavy Fields'. I made it in the fields near the village Helligsø, North Jutland, Denmark.
Eu não sei que tenho em Évora Que de Évora me estou lembrando. Quando chego ao rio Tejo As ondas me vão levando...
Abalei do Alentejo, Olhei para trás chorando. Alentejo da minh'alma Tão longe me vais ficando!
Ceifeira que andas à calma Ai, e à calma ceifando o trigo Ceifa as penas da minh'alma Ceifa-as leva-as contigo
Abalei do Alentejo, Olhei para trás chorando. Alentejo da minh'alma Tão longe me vais ficando!
English translation:
My Alentejo
I don't know what I left in Évora That makes me remember Évora When I reach the Tagus river Its waves carry my soul away.
I suddenly left the Alentejo And looked back, crying Oh, Alentejo of my soul You're so very far away from me!
You, harvester, who work so peacefully Oh you, who harvest the wheat so peacefully Harvest the sorrows from my soul Harvest them and carry them away with you
I suddenly left the Alentejo And looked back, crying Oh, Alentejo of my soul You're so very far away from me!

Flowers of the Lathyrus odoratus (Sweet pea), seem to perform a whirling dance, drunk on sunlight.

A pine fragrance, damp ground awakens The first light softly caresses the moss A spring morning blends with dark scents of the night
It's early in the morning. The first sunlight touches the moss between the trees. And as if the forest had been waiting for it, immediately the most wonderful scents rise up and mingle with the nightly smell of damp leaves and wood.
'Scent of Early Morning' is a new artwork in my collection 'Secret Places‘. I made this photo in the beautiful old forest ‘Dover plantage’ near the city of Hurup Thy, North Jutland, Denmark.

At the end of a gray spring day, a light breeze rises and the mist that has lain like a blanket over the land and sea all day disappears. A fairly dense cloud cover seems to conclude the day without sunshine. But then a clear, cloudless sky appears on the horizon. I run outside with my camera, moments like this usually only last about 10 minutes....

Morning breaks over the silent forest Clouds of mist rise from the moss, carrying the cold of a winter's night
On the threshold of spring, I walk through the woods early on a cold and misty morning. Shreds of mist rise from the ground, the day is beginning.
'Misty Morning (2)' is a new artwork in my collection 'Secret Places‘. I made it in the beautiful old forest ‘Dover plantage’ near the city of Hurup Thy, North Jutland, Denmark. Tall, stately spruces in a planted forest, but fortunately they are not in boring straight rows….

The sun disappears behind the mountain peaks, cold winds torment the valley and awake the dreams of this night
Another photo that I made on the occasion of the exhibition 'El Duende' in 2017. I made two series of photos in the mountains near Bellano, Italy. When making those series, the theme of the exhibition inspired me. I went looking for the spirit of mountains and valleys. Duende is identified as the spirit of evocation, physical and emotional response elicited by art. Having the Duende is having that thrill that makes you smile or cry when seeing a particularly expressive artistic performance. The term is often used in folk music in particular in Flamenco, during the most intense performance.

No one in the forest Thoughts come and go, aloneness Silence of the morning light
One foggy day, I go to a forest near our house. I hope it will be foggy in the forest too, unfortunately that turns out not to be the case. But the morning light and the silence in the deserted forest, create a special atmosphere. It gives space to let your thoughts run free.

Floating on water The last light of the sunset Colors Drowning

Not quite a sunset yet, but close. When the sun pierces through the cloud cover in winter, I have to take my chance. Too often the sun disappears behind a thick gray blanket immediately after briefly showing itself, only to show its face again the next day (or even a few days later). And if it also feels like the sun kisses the world before going to sleep, I have another good reason to quickly make a series of photos....

Colors disappear in the mist I am overwhelmed by silence, alone, afraid that I've lost my way But then I realize, to find the way is to stop looking
A gray, foggy day. A day like so many, where you only see vague outlines of the path you are walking. The silence and lack of sight are oppressive at first. Until you regain peace and confidence, and let the trees guide you.
I made this photo on a gray rainy day on a path near a canal in the vicinity of the city of Nijmegen in The Netherlands.

A lonely cold morning Footsteps muffled Endless carpet of stillness
Fresh snow, as far as the eye can see. The forest looks spacious, light, and larger than usual. It is quiet, and the world feels deserted. Only the muffled crunch of my footsteps in the fresh snow.
After two years without 'real' snow, last week we had a few centimeters of snow. A wonderful moment to enjoy the silence of a white forest.

Embrace the joy of daylight Find comfort in the bright light of a fresh breeze and the winter sun
Our day with no screens, no internet and (almost) no electricity was a breath of fresh air.
Literally, because we took a long walk. Figuratively, because we reflected and talked about our online time and use of electrical devices. Even in our minimalistic household, this generated several immediately implementable ideas, providing peace of mind, time for reflection, time to do different things for a change, and saving on our CO2 emissions.
So we will continue to do this. One day i-off and e-off every week. We can heartily recommend it, if only to become aware of your i-use and e-use and the alternatives that are available.

Embrace the silence of darkness Find comfort in the scant light of a candle and the winter sun
Anuscka and I decided to spend a day "in darkness" every week. Figuratively speaking that is, it will be a day with minimal use of electricity and no use of the internet, and screens in general.
Why? Because we are curious to see how we like it. And because we want to spend less time behind screens. Because we would like to have a recurrent period of silence and reflection. Finally, because using very little electricity for a day contributes significantly to reducing our CO2 footprint...

First snowflakes falling The cold breeze is scattering frozen scent of pines
After two years without 'real' snow, some snow fell in northwest Jutland earlier this week. Above that, it was cold enough for a few days to enjoy the white landscape. A wonderful moment for a walk in a forest. The delicate scent of damp pine trees is dispersed through the forest by an icy breeze.

A duende is a fairy- or goblin-like mythological creature from Spanish, Portuguese and South American folklore. Duendes also have some traits similar to goblins and kobolds.
The Duendes are forest spirits. They help people who get lost in the forest, so that they will find their way home. In time, the Duende is also the spirit of evocation. The physical and emotional response, elicited by art. So having the Duende is equivalent to that thrill that makes you smile or cry in front of a particularly expressive artistic performance.
I made 'Duende' with an old analog camera. It was the first impressionistic forestscape photo with that camera. A sunny morning on a path in a forest, near the city of Nijmegen in The Netherlands. The sunlight seems to dance across the path. It moves quickly from tree to tree. As a spirit that keeps an eye on me to see if I'm doing okay.

It is my conviction that after our death our spirit, our soul, travels to its origin somewhere in the universe. Once arrived, our energy is reunited with the energy from which everything around us once originated.

A cold winter afternoon, the sun almost sets. It is foggy. And fog, like clouds, provide the most beautiful colors when the sun goes down. A typical color palette for a Nordic sunset.
Sunset over the slightly frozen Limfjord, 7 years ago. We haven't had heavy frost and snow since that winter, here in North Jutland…
Through my artworks I ask you to reflect for a moment on the nature around you, on the beautiful feeling that nature can evoke. The wind whispers where land encounters the sea All sounds fade away
'Encounter' is a photo to the collection 'Wavy Fields'
I made this photo in early spring in the nature reserve Nationalpark Thy in northwest Jutland, Denmark. This part of the nature reserve is called Hanstholm Vildtreservat (Hanstholm wildlife reserve). On the horizon you can see a light blue stripe: the North Sea.

The last autumn sunset artwork in this series. The wind is strong, clouds drift quickly along the sky, rushing to catch the last rays of light.
Sunset over the dunes along the North Sea and the bay Krik Vig, part of the Limfjord. I made this photo standing in the fields near the hamlet where I live.

Darkness falls, the grass caresses the last light and bends into the night.
Shrouded (5): Bend Into The Night is the fifth and last photo in an abstract series of a sunset, using high grass as a filter for the bright light of the setting sun.

Through dusk andsilence, wandering overdeserted beaches
'Wandering soul' is an analog photo that I made during an evening walk on the beautiful North Sea beach near the town of Agger, North Jutland, Denmark.
I made this photo with an old Canon FTb SLR camera and a film with a 'best-before date' that is long gone...

The sun has set, the water of the fjord rapidly takes on the cold color of the night. Thin cloud veils seem to swallow up the colors of the sunset, until it's dark.

Darkness falls,
grassy forms
shatter into solar tears at
the color-shrouded
end of the day

While I was trying to photograph a sunset before the sun was completely below the horizon, I realized that the beauty of light is often determined by how it is filtered, veiled or scattered. Here on earth the light is always filtered by something. The atmosphere, clouds, a canopy, mist… In fact, all these 'filters' make the sunlight much more visible, even almost touchable…

"You white men are lost. You don't understand the land. Too many silly questions. Your presence on this earth will come to an end. You have no sense. No purpose. No direction."
Where The Green Ants Dream (1984, Werner Herzog), Quote: Miliritbi (played by Wandjuk Marika)
Associating is a strange phenomenon. Sometimes a line from a song or poem comes straight into my mind when I see a photo I've made. When my wife saw this photo yesterday, that I had made half an hour before, the first thing she said was: 'Where The Green Ants Dream'.
Images of that movie immediately came to my mind, and although this photo has no direct relationship to it, the title stuck in my head for this photo.
It fits perfectly for me...
'Where The Green Ants Dream' is a new photo in the collection 'Secret Places'.
Prints available in the collection 'Secret Places' on Saatchi Art.

I photographed a far too bright sunset two days ago. Then I suddenly realized that the beauty of light is often determined by how it is filtered, veiled or scattered. And here on earth the light is always filtered by something. The atmosphere, clouds, a canopy, mist… In fact, all these 'filters' make the sunlight much more visible, even almost touchable…

As of November 1st you can see my artworks on this new website!
The current website is a bit dated after 5 years, so it’s time for a new look. In a design made by my youngest son, I’ve been working hard the past few weeks to fill it with a selection of my work. Not everything is ready yet, but I’d appreciate it if you take a look. The current domain name jacobberghoef dot art remains in use and will also bring you on the new website from November 1st.
The photo: Autumn Sunset (6) - Golden Silence. Sunset above the North Sea, seen from where I live in Denmark.

When making this artwork, I questioned my love for light, contemplating whether it's the direct brightness or its filtered beauty that captivates. I experimented by using grass to soften the glare, produce the piece 'Shrouded (1),' and invite contemplation on nature's beauty.
